Well, I just returned from the Finca and I would have to say that it was the most profound life altering experience of my life. I have traveled all over the world and never before have I seen such unbelievable natural beauty!! I spent 6 days crawling all over the Finca for 4 to 6 hours a day. words can not begin to describe how overwhelmed I was by the life and beauty of the rainforest. The rivers, waterfalls, trees, flowers, birds, insect were the most amazing thing i have ever seen. I will write much more later but if anyone has any questions about the property, or anything going on down there please feel free to send me an email or reply here and i will do my best to answer. I truly believe that this project will be the most incredible experience of your life and that if you embrace the beauty and energy of the rain forest it will be the most cleansing and replenishing place you will ever spend time. I intend to build not only one tree house but potentially two or three. Please take the time to visit and i believe it will touch your soul.

        Hi Debbie!

Let us know when you would like to visit...November and October are typically the rainiest months of the year here, but then again, it's a La Nina year, which has tinkered with all the normal weather patterns.

If you'd like more detailed info on land availability and specific lots, send me your email address via info@fincabellavista.net.

Thanks for your interest in FBV!

I've only read, emailed Erica several times, and now subscribing to the blog on the treehouse living they have set-up. How did you get there ( I'm from Toronto, Canada )? How did you choose your lot? How far are you from the sea?

We read about it mid march and first week of may we were on site. We wanted to go dec 08, then aug 08, but lots were selling and we wanted in. So we own 2 riverfront lots now. We wanted waterfront so that narrowed down the choice, and there are a few left, but not many on the river. We flew thru TO, since that was when the american airlines were all stalling and cancelling for a bit there. Now tho, Mexicana Air flies direct Calgary to Mexico City and then to San Jose, thats' the way to go from now on. I would suggest as they do, to take a regional flight from San Jose to Golfito, that drive took years off our lives. I am going back in jan 09 to start preliminary plans for building our first treehouse. We are about 45-60 minutes from the ocean, but it's a great and adventurous drive. And the rivers are cool, accessible and refreshing, clean and beautiful.
You ahve to see it it to believe it, tho some have bought sight unseen i heard. Once you see, you're in tho, careful!

      Hi Brad,
We share your appreciation of FBV. My daughter and I visited in March only because a friend told us about FBV, and we fell in love with the place so much that I bought a lot on the spot!
I'm glad to hear that you're planning to build a treehouse or two, so are we. Have you started the planning process yet? If so, where would you recommend I go for some sample treehouse plans?

You mentioned that you would like to build 2 or 3 tree houses, are you buying a couple lots or taking part in helping others build? Do you think someone could live there w/ little money if they were able to buy a lot?

      Your comments are appreciated.

        Hi Lance!

Since you haven't received a response, I'd like to chime in...

Several of our owners have purchased multiple lots, while others have purchased a lot within a group of friends or in a partnership. In general, our guidelines encourage multiple, smaller structures. Hence, many people are planning on building a few smaller structures with the idea to connect them via rope bridges or aerial walkways as funds and time allow. (Gotta think Swiss Family Robinson!)

As far as income and money are concerned, Costa Rica is not the cheapest place in the world to live, nor is it expensive. We've found that basics like food are comparable to, if not a little less than, prices in the U.S. and Canada. Cars, gasoline, and travel are roughly the same too.

Many of our owners are trying to figure out the next steps, financially, to living in Costa Rica full or part-time (and where income will be coming from!). Because we have satellite Internet on-site, some see this as an opportunity to work from the finca if they have the ability to work remotely. The tourism, hosptiality and recreation industries are poised for considerable growth in the Southern Zone as well, given plans for the new International Airport near Palmar. This could open up a lot of business ownership opportunities, I would think.

        Dream big!

Would love to have your opinion about the trees. We are looking for thick trunk trees that are branchy. Large diameters. What are your thoughts??

    Hi friends!

In all honesty, I believe this site found its way to me through some very awesome people I share space with on MySpace. I purchased property in Parrita, CR a few years back and have been preparing to move, body, mind and soul within the next few years. I often wondered if I could build something that would not cause impediment among the wildlife and their habitat, the naturally beautiful and abundant, flourishing surroundings.
I believe this came to me as a gift, and
would so very much like to see and know more. So this is my first step to seeking and finding. Can you please let me know how we may come for a visit, the best way to travel from San Jose and-or Parrita, possible places to lodge and any other helpful info would be greatly appreciated. I have been a member of Scott's site, welovecostarica.com for several years now, but have never known about this wonderful habitat. I will be checking as soon as I finish this note.

    Please do keep in touch!

    In light, through LOVE,
    Pura Vida!

Hello everyone, I am very excited about the prospect of visiting Finca Bellavista for Christmas! Wondering if any of you know a moderately priced hotel/lodge to stay near Finca on the 23rd ( just so that it'll be easier to travel to Finca on the 24th ). It sounds silly to ask, but is Finca Bellavista located in the town of Palmar? ( been trying to find a hotel on the internet.. ) Wishing you all the best holidays, thanks. kyoko

Hello Kyoko, For price I think Palmar is the place to stay, Brunka Lodge. However, if you contact Matt or Erica directly, they would have more options, I'm sure. You may want to check out the Finca website for rentals at the finca.

It's really hard to put into words how I feel about FBV. The place is magical. Spending days hiking around the property, zip lining, birdwatching, herping (a boa and a fer-de-lance in the same day....can't beat that!), drinking rum at the "point", sleeping next to the waterfall, enjoying the company of many wonderful people....it just couldn't get any better. Thank you Matt and Erica for being amazing people with an outrageous idea. We can't wait to build our treehouse and spend lots of time at FBV!

What about security? Is it an issue like it is in most of central america? Do you have to be on guard 24/7? Or have a guard?

        Hi Deborah!

We already have 24/7 security in place here at the finca. Our caretaker, Marcial, is our security guard and lives at the base area where any vehicular access could occur. (He's kind of like the Chuck Norris of Costa Rica, so anyone with malicious intent would soon be deterred!) We also keep good relations with our neighbors in the area... because this is a very rural, agricultural zone, there isn't a whole lot of activity in our immediate vicinity. Our neighbors keep an eye out for one another, and keep tabs on new people or unfamiliar faces in the area.
For treehouses, security is an element of design and access. Our treehouse has a retractable staircase that we can bring up if we are going to be away for a given time. Unless someone has climbing equipment and can scale a 40-foot limbless span of tree trunk, they aren't getting in.

Feel free to shoot me any more questions if you have them. erica@fincabellavista.net
