We wanted to go dec 08, then aug 08, but lots were selling and we wanted in. So we own 2 riverfront lots now. We wanted waterfront so that narrowed down the choice, and there are a few left, but not many on the river. We flew thru TO, since that was when the american airlines were all stalling and cancelling for a bit there. Now tho, Mexicana Air flies direct Calgary to Mexico City and then to San Jose, thats' the way to go from now on. I would suggest as they do, to take a regional flight from San Jose to Golfito, that drive took years off our lives. I am going back in jan 09 to start preliminary plans for building our first treehouse. We are about 45-60 minutes from the ocean, but it's a great and adventurous drive. And the rivers are cool, accessible and refreshing, clean and beautiful.
You ahve to see it it to believe it, tho some have bought sight unseen i heard. Once you see, you're in tho, careful!

Comment on I love the Finca!

Hi Brad,
We share your appreciation of FBV. My daughter and I visited in March only because a friend told us about FBV, and we fell in love with the place so much that I bought a lot on the spot!
I'm glad to hear that you're planning to build a treehouse or two, so are we. Have you started the planning process yet? If so, where would you recommend I go for some sample treehouse plans?

Comment on Buying Land in Costa Rica

Greetings, Jerry!

Per your questions: Generally, the only type of tropical storms we have here at FBV involved tropical depressions off the coast... We don't have any type of hurricanes as we are perched along the Pacific Coast, not the very volatile Caribbean/Atlantic. There is a 12k foot moutain range between us and the Caribbean. As such, we sometimes have very heavy rains for a couple days in a row from the tropical depressions off the coast, but not the high winds normally associated with other storms.

Per the tree house construction, we use sustainably harvested, pressure treated pine for a lot of our framing, as well as native tropical hardwoods (also sustainably harvested, usually from the forest floor) that are impervious to insects. We use screens over windows/doors, but in general don't have many problems with stinging insects (mosquitoes and the likes) as we are located in a very cool and fresh climate (600-1500 feet above sea level) that gets into the mid-60's F every night(80's during the day), with almost no standing water (our 4 miles of rivers fall through rapids and waterfalls over the above-mentioned 900 feet of elevation gain).

The time it takes to build a tree house largely depends on the design, size, location, etc. of the structure. It is tough to put any sort of timeline on it without having a specific design/location. However, for example, our personal tree house and model home for FBV (seen in the most recent photo albums) took about two months to build (without working on it non-stop start to finish- propably could have been completed in one month straight through)...

Thanks for the questions!

Pura vida~

Mateo
Co-Founder

Comment on I love the Finca!

I've only read, emailed Erica several times, and now subscribing to the blog on the treehouse living they have set-up. How did you get there ( I'm from Toronto, Canada )? How did you choose your lot? How far are you from the sea?

Comment on Buying Land in Costa Rica

A few further questions that weren't answered in the FAQ section:

How often do tropical storms occur? How are the houses protected from termites and other bugs alike? Lastly, how long does the whole treehouse-building process take?

Comment on I love the Finca!

Hi Susie! I purchased property in Parrita, CR a few years back and have been preparing to move, body, mind and soul within the next few years. I often wondered if I could build something that would not cause impediment among the wildlife and their habitat, the naturally beautiful and abundant, flourishing surroundings.
I believe this came to me as a gift, and
would so very much like to see and know more. So this is my first step to seeking and finding. Can you please let me know how we may come for a visit, the best way to travel from San Jose and-or Parrita, possible places to lodge and any other helpful info would be greatly appreciated. I have been a member of Scott's site, welovecostarica.com for several years now, but have never known about this wonderful habitat. I will be checking as soon as I finish this note.

Please do keep in touch!

In light, through LOVE,
Pura Vida!
~Susie

Comment on Best time of the year to visit

So you bought sight unseen? I am not sure we are that brave. We will be there the same time, beginning of August and are looking at two lots also. Hopefully it's not too rainy, heard it is still a good time to go.

Comment on Best time of the year to visit

My finace Matthew and I will be going to FBV for our first time at the end of July for our honeymoon! We purchased two parcels near the tip of the property where the two rivers meet. WE are so excited to come down to FBV for our first time and see our property. I don't think I have ever been there in the "green season" so it sould be fun. We will probably bring those rubber boots you suggest, thanks for that.
Quick dry clothes, too.
We are open to any and all suggestions and advice for our rainy season honeymoon!
